Qbaa: Restaurant, Wine Cellar, Music Lounge – Colombo, Sri Lanka

We wanted to celebrate Midge’s birthday and since all four of us had never been to Qbaa for dinner we decided to go check it out.

I called a few days in advance and booked a table for four at the restaurant. The reservation was for 8.30pm as it was a weekday night and I was told by friends who had been there to book a table as it could get very crowded due to their extremely popular Jazz Night on Thursdays.

I was the first to get to the restaurant and spent almost twenty minutes looking through the wine list, cocktail and food/snack menu till the others decided to join me. The place was neatly decorated and the thing that captivated my attention right throughout my two hours there was the funky guitars mounted on the wall.

Funky Guitars

I ordered a Sex on the Beach (Rs. 690) and it arrived almost instantly. Midge arrived next and proceeded to order a Bahama Mama (Rs. 780) but it took about 15 minutes for them to serve the cocktail to our table. Both cocktails were served in tall glasses and I was impressed with the presentation however they were choked with ice and therefore watered down. The other two arrived a few minutes later and we proceeded to order our food.

We settled for the Aubergine Cappuccino (Rs. 450), Char Grill Tuna Steak with Spicy Szechuan Crab Rice (Rs. 750), Mustard Prawns wrapped in Bacon (Rs. 980) and two portions on the Jerk Marinated Pork with Pineapple (Rs. 850).

At the time that I got to the restaurant there were only two tables occupied and once we placed our orders for food we were the only diners in the restaurant. The food took about twenty minutes to arrive and this is when the service started to deteriorate. The waiters seemed to be more engrossed with what was happening outside than paying attention to our table because if they did they would have noticed that our table needed to be cleared of the empty cocktail glasses and room made for our plates. This didn’t happen and it was Midge and Esh who moved the empty cocktail glasses onto the table closest to ours and also got rid of the empty bread basket to create more room on the table.

The food was excellent! The portion of pork chops was extremely generous – there were three big chops with a healthy serving of mashed potatoes, vegetables and a cup full of seasoned and diced pineapple. The mustard prawns wrapped in bacon looked as good as it tasted – it was just divine and served with a fresh vegetable salad; this dish left us wishing we’d ordered two portions instead of one! The tuna steak was grilled to perfection and the accompanying spicy Szechuan crab rice was an absolute winner – I might not have actually ordered it because I didn’t think that a tuna steak would go well with rice however Midge wanted it as she always likes to eat spicy food and on this occasion it was superb – two thumbs up to the chef on all the dishes that we ordered sans the aubergine cappuccino which was too think and lacked flavour.

We had planned to share dessert when we ordered our meals but by the time we’d devoured our food we didn’t have any space for dessert as we were absolutely stuffed!

The total bill was Rs. 5350 and with the taxes we ended up paying Rs. 6741 which I think is extremely reasonable for the delicious meal that we had.

I will definitely go back to try out more of their delicious menu however I hope by then the service would have improved and that the waiters will not stand around watching the happenings outside the restaurant and won’t have to be prompted to clear our plates, refill our glasses with water or even bring us the bill.
